High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is the latest interface for the connection of audio/video equipment using all digital signals for both audio and video transmission. This simplifies the connection process by eliminating separate cables for the audio and video connections. The small size of the HDMI interface is an improvement over the larger DVI type interfaces.

An all-digital, uncompressed signal provides the highest quality video and audio, direct from the source. HDMI supports every video format in the consumer electronics industry, including 1080p 60Hz. It also supports uncompressed audio formats up to 8 channels of 192kHz PCM audio, with up to 24 bits/sample. All current compressed formats are supported, such as AC-3, DTS, MPEG, and One-Bit Audio (DSD). And HDMI will support new high bitrate, lossless compressed formats, including DTS-HD and MLP (Dolby TrueHD). HDMI also features backward compatibility with DVI, so users can display PC gaming or entertainment content on their HDTV. Plus, HDMI version 1.2 is fully backward compatible with versions 1.1 and 1.0.
